This introductory writing course focuses on projects useful for students working as au pairs and nannies. The assignments involve critical reading, thinking, listening, and writing for a variety of audiences. Students will learn how to develop their ideas; organize rough drafts; respond to peer and instructor feedback; and revise and edit their documents. Students will compile a polished resume, cover letter, and follow-up letter, that highlight their English-language proficiency (speaking, listening, writing, and reading comprehension). Each student will also develop a responsible social media post, properly researched and cited, through a process of discovering, analyzing, and synthesizing information drawn from both print and electronic sources. For those who are seeking to rematch with a new family for their extension year, the course will guide students in writing a letter of introduction and creating online flyers/posters, for this purpose. The course meets in a computer classroom, so that students can work on projects with one-on-one instructor help. All needed resources will be provided to successfully complete the coursework. There will also be frequent opportunities for small-group interaction and collaboration, in our conversational learning community. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a certificate of completion (36 contact hours).
