Discover Your Potential:
Effective leadership skills

Leadership Academy is designed to provide leadership opportunity for career-focused individuals and refine skills which are applicable to their own unique environment. This year, Leadership Academy will explore the fundamentals of Leadership Foundations. Participants will discuss ways of growing in leadership capacity and personalize future goals. Each session offers professional development, mentorship with community guest leaders, and goal identification that fits within personal leadership plans.

The program will focus on content that is relevant to the current local workforce; enhancement of critical thinking, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making that help to meet the challenges of our changing and complex world.

SCHEDULE:

June 4 | 8:30am-12pm | Opening Kick-Off and Servant Leadership | Mary Kay McVey
·  Opening Kick-Off Speaker: Chamber president kick-off leadership academy – Invite other community Chamber of Commerce to the kick-off
· Session Kick-Off Speaker: Learn from the experts how communities are changing in the north metro
·  Learn the best definition of a servant leader
·  Understand the principles of servant leadership
·  Leading and influencing without authority
·  Servant Leadership projects – have local organizations present leadership project ideas.  Examples of projects include community service projects, helping local non-profits, or other businesses.
·  The project should be one in which a participant of the leadership academy would lead.  A project could have multiple deliverables, in which case, multiple people could work on the same project, but each person would lead one deliverable.

June 11 | 8:30am-5pm | DiSC Training
·  Session Kick-Off Speaker: Local Human Resource person to discuss the importance of knowing oneself to be an effective leader
·  The participants will complete the DiSC assessment before this class
·  The DiSC training is designed to help you better understand yourself and how to adapt your behavior with others to maximize team performance
·  Learn how to manage more effectively by understanding the dispositions and priorities of employees and team members

June 18 | 8:30am-12pm | Emotional Intelligence
·  Session Kick-Off Speaker: Local Human Resource person to discuss the importance of knowing and controlling how your emotions affect you and your co-workers
·  Take an emotional intelligence (EQ) assessment before class (link to the assessment will be sent via email to participants)
·  Understand the four areas of EQ and your ability to be aware of, understand and manage your emotions  and how your emotions affect the performance of your team

June 25 | 8:30am-12pm | Understanding and Valuing Differences
·  Session Kick-Off Speaker: Local operations director/manager/supervisor to discuss “What does a moral character and performance have in common?”
·  Take the Myers-Briggs personality assessment before class (link to the assessment will be sent via email to participants)
·  Learn about your personality and how you prefer to behave regardless of the situation you are in.  There are four function areas: Action, Decision, Information, and Energy & Focus
·  Our judgments about people at work should be based on moral character and performance
·  Learn how to create a shared understanding of goals, work, and teams

July 9 | 8:30am-12pm | Organizational Leadership
·  Community Leaders: Discuss with community leaders the future plans to create a vibrant region, while honoring the area’s legacy
·  Learn about the art of communication,  how to build and lead an effective improvement team, and how to run effective meetings
·  Learn how to make Microsoft Outlook work for you

July 16 | 8:30am-12pm | People Skills & Confrontation Solutions
·  Session Kick-Off Speaker:  Local sales director/manager/supervisor to discuss “Why are people skills so vital to having a high-performance team?”
·  Learn how to listen, create an agreement, and effectively work through productive confrontation
·  Learn the art of asking questions
·  Understand how to build work relationships

July 23 | 8:30am-12pm | Conflict Management & Productive Conflict
·  Session Kick-Off Speaker:  Local organization that has had a successful Lean implementation (i.e. Mold Craft). Discuss how they overcame resistance to change when implementing lean.
·  Understand the steps, elements, and measures of Conflict Management
·  Overcoming resistance to change
·  Learn how to create a shared understanding of work and conflict

July 30 | 8:30am-12pm | Effective & Proactive Training
·  Session Kick-Off Speaker:  Training and Development person to discuss the importance of onboarding employees
·  Community Leaders: Community area organizations discuss their best ways to train employees
·  Frontline leader’s role in the hiring process
·  Training for generations
·  Employee Performance Management and Coaching

August 6 | 8:30am-12pm | The Role of Ethics in Business
·  Community Leaders:  Leadership to discuss the importance and benefits of ethics in business and leadership – the majority of this session will be led by different CEOs, executive level, director level, and manager/supervisors to discuss the role of ethics in business and leadership.  Also, how their company participants in corporate social responsibility.
·  Learn what ethical leadership behaviors are and what are the benefits of business ethics
·  Learn what corporate social responsibility is and how leadership contributes

August 13 | 8:30am-12pm | Presentation of Projects & Storyboards | Graduation Ceremony & Celebration
·  Session Kick-Off Speaker: Chamber member to thank participants for working on their leadership projects
·  Each person/team will present the projects and storyboards for the attendees (5-7 min )
·  Graduation Speakers: Chamber president, local organizations
·  Celebrate Success! Graduation ceremony – presentation of certificates by Chamber president and project mentors

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

MARY KAY MCVEY is a doctoral candidate at University of Arizona studying Organizational Development and Leadership. Her dissertation topic is “Preparing Millennials for Leadership.” Mary Kay earned her master’s degree in Project Management from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville and her undergraduate in Engineering Technology from the University of Wisconsin – Stout.

Mary Kay has been an instructor with Minnesota State Colleges since 2017. She enjoys working with companies who commit to learning these methods and help to improve business efficiencies and increase profits. She finds great reward in determining and implementing a sustainable business culture that works for the companies she partners with.
