The Public Safety Leadership Training Program is designed for public safety and service leaders in fields such as law enforcement, emergency management, fire service, public health service, emergency medical services, environmental health and safety services, nonprofit organizations engaged in public safety and service, homeland security, and public administration to develop the essential leadership skills they will need to direct and manage public safety and service programs and teams. This certificate is designed to support mid- and senior- level leaders, including military service members and those planning to transition into civilian service.

Understanding Your Role as a Public Safety Supervisor
Research shows new managers are usually promoted without the skills needed to be a good manager or leader, and 47% of companies do not provide new supervisory training. Sound familiar? The negative patterns you learn in your first year as a supervisor generally haunt you for the rest of your career. This class helps you better understand the difference between leadership and management and how YOU play a role in both. You will learn about accountability, trust, policy, and your daily presentation needed to be a respected supervisor.
Communicating with Diverse Personality Styles Part 1-Characteristics and Traits of the Four Styles
In leadership, it is essential that the leader be able to deal with diverse personality styles. Usually at work people develop a limited “friend group” and pretty much associate exclusively with them. This will not be effective for a leader. They must learn to work with many different styles of people. This class will introduce participants to the four basic personality styles along with their characteristic traits, work habits and strengths. Participants will also take a short personality survey to see where they are on the personality spectrum. This is considered core knowledge every leader must have to be self-aware and also mindful of those around them.
Communicating with Diverse Personalit Styles Part 2 – Management Application Skills-Delegation, Motivation, Communication
Building on part 1, this class further enhances the knowledge base of participants in working with diverse personality styles. This class will focus on practical managerial skills customized for each style. How each style prefers to be motivated, delegated to , communicated with on a regular basis. In order to succeed leaders must learn techniques and adaptability skills so they can be flexible in how they manage their team to develop respect and “likeability.”
Professionalism, Work Ethic and Personal Responsibility
Nothing will ruin team spirit and morale more than poor work ethic. The leader must present a professional image and hold themselves to higher standards of work ethic. This class covers over 20 common work ethic areas including: attendance, being on-time, cell phone abuse, social media, appearance, attitude, quality of work, participation, speed, etc. Participants will not only learn awareness but also methods to instill strong work ethic in themselves and their team.
Coach, Mentor, and Discipline
One of the fundamental roles of a leader and manager is to keep employees engaged in their work and vested in the organizational mission. As a supervisor it is important to know when to coach, when to mentor, and when to go down the road of changing behavior through discipline. This class will assist participants in defining the difference between the three and how to properly implement them within your organization.
Ethics and Your Reputation
Ethics plays a major part in your effort to build a good reputation and the trust amongst the people you associate with. This class introduces participates to the concept of ethics and how their new role as a supervisor will require them to make decisions based on common morals, traditional values, and personal experiences. The class will go through several real-life ethical scenarios to help them become better aware of ethical theory.
