Electrical Safety Training

Categories Trades

According to NFPA 70E – 2024 Article 110.4, electrical safety training is required at least every three years for electricians, electrical workers, maintenance mechanics, instrumentation specialists, and many other trades and crafts that encounter electrical shock and arc flash hazards when performing their jobs. Such employees need to have regular training to understand the specific hazards associated with electrical energy. They also need specific training on safety-related work practices and procedural requirements, so they are protected from the electrical hazards associated with their respective job or task assignments. NFPA 70 also requires that these employees need regular training to identify and understand the relationship between electrical hazards and possible injury.

After completing this course, learners will be issued a Certificate of Completion and up to four MN DOLI approved CEU’s applicable for renewing their MN Master or Journeyman Electrician license.  Though this is a CEU-level class, it is designed to meet the needs of a much broader audience than licensed electricians.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, learners will be able to:

  • Apply their knowledge of electrical hazards to safely release electrical shock victims.
  • Understand the updates to NFPA 70E and recognize and understand the hazards associated with electrical energy.
  • Identify and select safe work practices based on the tasks they are performing.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical hazards to understand the impact and severity of possible injury.
  • Recognize signs of impending failure and how to address them.
  • Demonstrate what constitutes energized work and when an energized work permit is required.
  • Apply the limited approach distance tables for different voltages.
  • Select the proper insulated tools and testing instruments for working within the restricted approach boundary.
  • Show how to use the eight-step process for establishing an electrically safe work condition.
  • Apply the process for completing the task-based shock hazard and arc flash hazard risk assessments.
  • Demonstrate the decision-making process for selecting appropriate electrical safety PPE
  • Identify the elements of equipment arc flash labeling
